Over the years, the services offered at the Centre have become more
comprehensive.
Pre-birth to Preschool Services, Early Intervention Services, Supported
Child Development Services as well as Child and Youth Services are available
through the Kitimat Child Development Center.
Healthy Babies
This pregnancy outreach program contract outlines the following deliverables:
- Pre and post natal services
- Promotion of positive health practices that contribute to the health
of newborns and mothers.
- Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and prevention work
Individual counseling as well as drop in sessions
- Multidisciplinary team including Peer Support Workers
- Ongoing training of employees
- Program promotion within the community of Kitimat
- Work closely with other service agencies in the community to ensure
there is no duplication and be able to refer clients to other services
that they may require.
Child and Youth
The Centre holds two child and youth care contracts. One is funding
from MCFD directly and the other is from the School District.
- Community Link Program : we are now in our third
year of operating this program in all elementary schools, KCH and
MESS. This funding comes from the School District on an annual basis.
This program provides in school resources that address emotional,
social and behavioural issues that may interfere with a child’s
ability to succeed at school, at home and in the community.
- Reach for a Sunbeam. This program provides support
to children (ages four to eighteen) and families who are at risk of
experiencing mental health issues. Referrals come from the Ministry
of Children and Family Development- Youth Mental Health.
Strengthening Families Pilot Project
This pilot project is with CMHA –Canadian Mental Health Association-BC
Division
There are 5 pilot sites in the province.
• Provides a forum for support to youth and families experiencing
mental illness. Consumers will provide mutual support through increased
involvement in decision making and strengthening network opportunities
• Community mapping of existing mental health programs and supports
will be done.
• 2 year pilot project Mary 2005 to March 2007. One day per
week of staffing is funded with $ 22,000 for wages, supplies and transportation.
• Program collaborates with Reach for a Sunbeam and Youth Mental
Health MCFD
Life Skills: This contract is with Northern Health.
This contract is billed out per client referral and hours of service
provided.
Autism Funding-ABS
This program is not funded on a contract to the Centre.
Parents provide service requests which are generally paid through invoice-
MCFD –autism funding processing unit. Program provides behavioural
consulting, planning, development and service co-ordination, and intervention
for families with children on the Autism spectrum.
