CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH
THE 2010 BC SUMMIT
Recently we had the privilege of being invited to the Champions for Children and Youth Summit in Vancouver, BC.
Luiza Couto, our Reach for a Sunbeam Community Mental Health Support
Worker as well as Anna Canil and
Dylan McGrath-Burke represented our centre.
Building on the work started in 2008, the 2010 event brought together a wide range of national and international experts, front line workers and most importantly children and your themselves.
Together they moved forward in the long term effort to develop a plan for BC's children, releasing a unique report called "Growing Up in BC"

In 2009 we celebrated 35 years of providing services in our community.
The Kitimat Child Development Centre Association (KCDCA) is a non-profit
organization that began operating in the District of Kitimat in 1974.
The Centre came into being because a group of parents wanted a variety
of services for their children in one central place. This was supported
by their pediatrician and together they formed our society.
Over the years the Kitimat Child Development Centre- A Family Resource Centre has evolved into
a fully inclusive, family centered, community driven organization. Initially,
the Centre provided specialized services to children who were challenged
physically, intellectually, socially and/or emotionally. Our services
broadened over the years to include youth programs and programs focusing
on prevention and support for parents.
For many years our services were housed in the Kitimat Hospital and
in the City Center Mall. In 2001, with the opening of a new health centre
in Kitimat, we moved our services into rental within our public schools.
In the summer of 2002 we moved all our services into the “old”
School District Board Office. At 1515 Kingfisher Ave. Kitimat B.C. V8C
3S5. This building became available due to the amalgamation of School
Districts in the Northwest. With our new location all our services can
be operated out of one accessible location. The long term lease we have
with our School District allows us to have all our services in one “home”.
Over the summer of 2004 we completed major interior renovations
and added a playground to this site. Our next building goal is to have full access to the lower floor by installing an elevator or a lift between the main and lower floors.
In 2008 we expanded our child care services to include infant/toddler day care services, merging Stepping Stones Day Care with our Child Development Centre services into the CORMORANT CHILD CARE Centre operating in partnership with the School District in the once closed Cormorant Elementary School. In 2008/2009 school year we started two out of school/kindercare child care programs in Nechako and Kildala Elementary Schools.
The Centre has always been incorporated under the Society’s Act
of British Columbia, thus providing accountability to both the community
it serves and the funding of providers. The membership on our Board
of Directors is a mix of parents, community and business members.
As a strategic organization, our mission statement has changed as we
grow. Our initial mission statement was “To support children with
special needs and their families to be the best they can be . Our new
mission statement adopted in 2003 is:
“To support children, youth and families."
